Melt value is the intrinsic worth of the pure gold in your item at current spot market prices. It represents the maximum theoretical value if the gold were refined and sold as a commodity. This is different from retail or resale value — decorative or antique items may be worth more due to craftsmanship.
Dealers need to cover refining costs (typically 1–3%), business overhead, staff, and profit margin. Most reputable dealers offer 70–90% of melt value. The exact percentage depends on the dealer, quantity of gold sold, current market conditions, and form of gold. Larger quantities usually get better rates.
14K gold (58.3% pure, stamped "585") is the most common karat in US jewelry, prized for its balance of gold content, durability, and affordability. 10K (41.7%) is popular in budget jewelry. 18K is found in higher-end fine jewelry but is more common in European and Asian markets.
Prices are fetched live from the gold spot market API every 60 seconds and are very close to real-time spot prices. A fallback price is used if the API is temporarily unavailable. Note that spot prices are wholesale trading prices — retail buy/sell prices will differ. All values are indicative only and should not be used as financial advice.

About GoldScrap Calculator

GoldScrap Calculator is a free, browser-based tool that helps individuals, jewelers, and precious metal enthusiasts determine the true melt value of their scrap gold. By using live spot prices fetched directly from the gold market, our calculator provides accurate, real-time valuations for all common gold purities — from 9 carat to 24 karat.

Whether you're in the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand, our multi-currency support ensures you see values in your local currency. The tool supports weight entry in grams, pennyweights (dwt), troy ounces, and avoirdupois ounces — the units most commonly used when weighing and selling gold.

Remember: melt value is the maximum you could theoretically receive if refining the gold yourself. Licensed dealers and refiners will offer between 70% and 90% of melt value in practice. Use our dealer percentage slider to see realistic offer estimates. All prices are for informational purposes and do not constitute financial advice.
